Let me show you something I’ve just completed. Sometimes I’m led by the textiles I have found, can’t help thinking that there was also a symbolic force pushing me to use this rising Phoenix in my latest work. Not original but it’s not often I find a exquisite vintage embroidery of one! Regeneration and renewal is also reusing antique textiles and when I find something good, I like to let it shine again.

The Phoenix and other parts of couched metallic embroidery were from a seriously tattered Chinese wall hanging that had disintegrated apart from the embroidery. No idea unfortunately, what it’s original meaning was for or it’s true age. The metallic thread was tarnished so had some age to it.

I had an idea to make a panelled artwork for sometime. I love Chinese and Japanese screens that are beautiful works of art with either ink paintings or paint on gold leaf. I started with a antique linen sheet which I dyed with coffee, tea, rust and even walnuts to achieve a gently aged look as a backdrop. It is then about working out the elements together, which ones work, which ones don’t. I decided to add the gold leaf on to the two outer panels to “ground” the embroidered appliqués so they weren’t floating around. The appliqués are a combination of early 19th century chenille foliage and some of the metallic embroidery from the original Chinese wall hanging. All the appliqués were hand stitched onto the background, a labour intensive task as the metallic embroidery was fragile in places.

The final piece measures 28” height and 34½ wide as three panels. I don't tend to do that much sampling unless it's to try out something that can't be reversed. As I use antique textiles, it's not a case of starting again if I don't like the result. I experimented with using gold leaf as a background and embroidering on top to see the effect.

What I learnt was that it was tough to stitch through and it would need a few coats of glue on top to stop it flaking off.

Earlier this month, I took part in my first in person selling event in two years. After having a “tidy up”, I found many cyanotype prints that I had made so looked for a Christmas fair in my area. I took part in the EtsyLocal fair in South London at a lovely venue in Peckham that had lots of natural light and a cafe/bar! Above is the display of my table. It was interesting to see the difference in visitor spending habits with the recent economy in the UK and events affecting it. I have been selling at fairs and markets since 2010 and have definitely noticed the change, the exhibiting fees go up but customer spending has gone drastically down!

For any budding artists and designer/makers looking to sell their work this way, I would visit first and really think if it is the right audience for your work. You will find it, just investigate and that will save time and money in the future. There is definitely an audience for textile art but not every event is right for it which is why I chose to only show my prints here.

I want to thank you, my audience for your continued interest and support. It is very much appreciated. Textile lovers are niche lot but our reward is great!

Have a wonderful festive time and peaceful New Year where ever you are in the world.

Hello again!

My next blog posts will be about my latest textile artwork which I am currently making while on a enforced break from my full time job. While it is worrying times and an uncertain future, I can’t help but see this as an opportunity for personal development. A chance to work on and explore areas that interest me though never quite found the time including a regular exercise routine! 😆

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; text-align: justify;">I thought it would be interesting to post about the making of a textile piece and the thought process that goes with it. I like to see other artists working and the progress of what their making, it’s interesting to see the stages, what works, what doesn’t and the idea behind the work.

I keep a little book, not even a sketch book as such, that has ideas, designs, things that interest me even shopping lists of what materials I need to buy! From a seed of an idea through something I read or seen, I do a little research.

My latest piece came about from a number of sources. With some exceptions, my overall work is influenced by a interest in cosmology and have always had a fascination for the night sky. I was rewatching the recent version of the science documentary Cosmos, a spacetime odyssey (I loved the original Carl Sagan version!) and there was a episode called "A sky full of ghosts" a poetic description of stars. The episode was about the speed of light and how the light we see from stars are from billions of years ago when we observe them on Earth. It is amazing to know that the light we see now is like looking into the past. A spark of an idea formed...

I looked through my extensive fabric stash and picked one bought a few years ago that's been waiting for the right purpose. It is a antique Japanese Furoshiki wrapping cloth originally to bundle belongings together before plastic bags became more the norm. Dyed in deep indigo it is pieced together from three strips of cloth and has wonderful sashiko stitching in a fan design on each corner. The stitching would have originally cumulated into a plaited braid to then tie together to make a bundle. These have worn away as has one of the corners.

There are rips, holes, patches, fading and stains, lovely! I do not want to hide these elements, they are highlighted and used in the design, the textile's history is part of the finished piece. This is what attracted me to it in the first place so why hide it? <span style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The final design was dictated by the dimensions of the textile and the sashiko stitching in each corner that is quite dominant.

Two of my recent works made completely from antique textiles. I have quite a collection now of old fabrics and look for ways of using them as they are amazing in their own right. The main background of these two wall hangings are from an old flour sack that’s been patched and darned many times which gives it a wonderful texture. <span style="caret-color: rgb(68, 68, 68); color: #444444; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">You can still faintly see the printed writing of the flour sack.

The printed fabrics are also from a 19th century decorative border. <span style="color: #444444; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I have worked in free machine stitching, repeats of the antique print patterns.

Here is my latest textile work, three months in the making. The theme is of course, the Milky Way, of which the title 'Backbone of the night' refers to. I had an idea of extreme contrast of a white centre merging into deepest indigo of which was achieved through a bit of shibori dyeing, tightly wrapping cord round the middle and multiple dip dyeing. Some cold wax resist was applied to suggest stars and red Victorian fabric circles were needle punched through the main cloth to suggest supernovas.

I liked the idea of mapping the stars and referring to our planet's unique position in the galaxy so coordinates of the nearest stars and projection lines are stitched into the overall design. The piece went through various design stages from sampling to unpicking stitching on the actual piece that didn't work. There was going to be big red hand stitching on the outer edges that I eventually rejected. Through out the making, I constantly think, changing and making decisions which is all part of the process and labour spent on a work.

My work involves using antique and vintage textiles, the rips, darns, pattern and stains all become part of the design. The main fabric is part of a antique linen sheet dyed in indigo. Round the edges of the piece (see photo below), dark blue vintage Japanese fabric has been needle punched from underneath to give a rough worn texture.

I use hand dyed threads in cotton, silk and linen in a variety of thicknesses. Hand stitching in a running stitch is mainly applied all over the work with the machine embroidered design restricted to the centre. I love hand stitching the most as it's satisfying for me to do but also I like to see the handworked element.

The whole piece is then backed onto a light cotton batting and vintage cotton sheeting with a bias bound edge to help give body to it. Eventually, once the piece has been exhibited at the Festival of Quilts this August, it will be mounted and framed so it's more easy to sell as an artwork.
I wasn’t familiar with her work as textile artists are not as mainstream unlike painters and designers, so it was thrilling to discover a textile pioneer! Work from the 1920s till the 1960s was displayed in a major retrospective of her ideas, textiles and her writings on the history of weaving.

She was first introduced to the art of weaving at the radical art school, the Bauhaus in Germany as an alternative to painting as that wasn’t deemed suitable for ladies to study!

Weaving is a craft skill that I am fascinated with and if I had the time would try a short course for my own interest. It was mesmerising looking at Anni Albers work up close to see the colours, textures and sheer complexity of her weaving skills. I absolutely loved this exhibition and was amazed and quite hearten by the fact it was given a platform by such a major gallery. There still is a major climb in the general public’s perception in textiles as “art”, as exampled by bored students visiting, overheard dismissing the work as rugs! The teacher with them was no help as he remarked “we don’t do weaving, do we?”

Hopefully, if more artists textiles were given this type of serious academic attention then the views will gradually change.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">For the past 3 months, I have been working on a very large wall hanging with the intention of submitting it for the Festival Of Quilts, Fine Art Quilt Masters competition. It is a big event in the textile calendar attracting huge visitors to the hundreds of quilts on display, workshops, exhibitions and shopping for craft supplies. It is held every year at the NEC arena in Birmingham and I visited it a few years ago and was impressed by the variety of work on display.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">With the great intention of applying and making a quilt for entry for the past few years, I finally found the time to do it. Of course, having an idea to implement is also part of the worry as there has <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">to have a visual impact for a large piece (one side has to be at least 1 metre). I did’t have any set idea in mind as an idea organically changes once you start putting texture, colours and pattern together. I did though plan the top layer of the quilt to be a large cyanotype print but as I washed the fabric out, the print disappeared! Back to the drawing board...

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">So here it is. "Multiverse" is a large wall hanging completely made from antique and vintage fabrics. The main textile is a 19th century hemp dyed in indigo, worn, patched and mended. Behind the holes and patches, contrasting coloured and pattern fabrics, vintage quilt pieces and Japanese textiles are placed.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">Areas of the quilt are heavy stitched by hand to create texture and colour. I have mainly used dyed linen and silk threads with sashiko cotton thread being the bind through the fabric layers. The finished piece is 147cm x 125cm with three main layers. The whole piece is in fact, all hand stitched as I love stitching by hand, but also adds the unique element of human contact. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">The striking red that edges round, is from a 19th century quilt backing and the outer fabric is from the edges of a paste-resist 19th century Chinese textile. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">The title of the piece, "Multiverse" refers to the hypothesis of alternative universes coexisting with our own. The swatches of colour, pattern and densely stitched areas represent the different time dimensions. The constant renewal of materials whether it be molecules, gasses or fabrics is a source for exploration and the “boro” ideology is an excellent example of reusing textiles to this effect.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">I am thrilled to say that it has been shortlisted with 22 other amazing quilts for the Fine Art Quilt Master competition with the winner being announced on the 8th August after the judges have seen the quilts. This time I was selling with other artists not just a specialist textile fair, so I got to show my work to a different audience. There were some jewellery, ceramics and photography stands as well as fine art and mixed media. A good mix of subject matter was present though nature seemed the most popular theme.

As always at this venue, the people were friendly and curious about my techniques, the cyanotypes in particular capturing interest. It’s very important to get feedback on your work, to see how others see it as I get a bit dismissive about my work, seeing it too much without distance can have a negative effect. Having it hung altogether on the wall is invaluable. I certainly noticed that I have too many moons in my work!

It’s great to meet other exhibitors and chat about their experiences selling their work, a good way to learn from others. It was a successful show for me with enquiries afterwards too. This was the only in person show I’m doing for the moment, though I will have some work on show at the studios I’m based at in early December. A chance to have a wee rest!
Caro Ramseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05351087660015668070noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8950446831334831376.post-33838510480477859092017-10-12T21:46:00.001+01:002017-10-12T23:50:04.942+01:00Selling event at the Landmark Art Autumn Fair 14-15 October 2017

This weekend I’m going to be at the Landmark Art Autumn Fair in Teddington selling my latest work. After folding and pleating, the folded fabric is held in place with plastic or wooden shapes with clamps. This is to stop the dye which will be applied from penetrating the folds so there will be undyed areas. Once soaked in water, the clamped fabric can be immersed in dye or spooned on. Back again to the beautiful Landmark Arts Centre for this year's Contemporary Textile Fair. I return here each year because it has a lovely atmosphere and attracts a good audience of textile enthusiasts to sell and chat to.

As well as the framed textile pieces which sell well, I made a showstopper of a wall hanging. It's always good to have a large piece to attract attention and draw in the crowds. Though I do get a bit anxious when its feels that my hand stitching is being scrutinised by others who stitch themselves!
There were lots of other talented artists and makers showing this year, but I managed not to buy anything for myself which is really difficult as there's lots of temptation! After all, I'm there to sell..

I will be back at the same venue in October for the Landmark Autumn Art Fair. I haven't exhibited my work before amongest other forms of fine art so will be exposed to a different audience. Hopefully, textile art will be appreciated as it does tend to be undervalued and not represented at a lot of art venues. It's that fine line between being seen as art or craft. Time to change that perception!
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Though I taught myself cyanotype printing, there is always an opportunity to learn from someone else new skills. There was a short 2 day course at a nearby college on cyanotypes so I jumped at the chance to improve and learn some more about this wonderful early printing technique.
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Having only used cotton fabric before I wanted to expand onto different fabrics (though only works on natural fibres) and learn how to change the colour. It was also interesting to use paper which I've never done before.<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In the past I used images to print, this time I made use of objects such as leaves and feathers.
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> A great advantage of going to a college is the use of their fancy equipment and when the sun don't shine, a screen exposure unit is a great substitute. There is<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; text-align: center;"> a different quality to the images, more predictable and even. With the sun, you can move the image/ object around to get a ghosting effect and also shadows can be cast to give a 3D look.
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The thing I love about cyanotypes is the brilliant blue colour but you can remove this and tint it with tannin or tea for a sepia tone. There are definitely more ways to experiment with different coloured backgrounds and with other tints and over washes.
Heavens, has it been that long since I've updated my blog?

A lot has happened that has kept me more than occupied. Between moving home (twice!), finding a new job and exhibiting at the Contemporary Textile Fair, it's been challenging updating this blog. My instagram feed on the otherhand is the best place to see what I'm making at the moment!

So, the textile fair at the Landmark Arts Centre was once again a joy to take part in.
As well as meeting lovely people who are interested in my work, it's great to meet fellow makers and artists and see their work and hear their experiences.
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

I never take for granted that people are keen to buy and are sometimes surprised when they do! This year's fair was excellent and I'm glad that getting my larger work professionally framed not only took a lot of the workload off me, but looked pretty darn good too. I left the frames unstained for buyers to decide on what they liked for their homes as we all have different tastes.

Getting postcards printed was also a good idea; a small cost memento to be bought and serves as a excellent business card for me too. I hired an art browser to display my mounted prints and artwork which was a great space saver and easier for viewing. People do love a rummage!
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

Each exhibition, I find a new way to display my work and try to see how I can capture people's interest. It's always a learning curve! Overall, I was pleased with how my stand looked and it did get a lot of interest. I thought this year's fair had a good steady flow of visitors and there was lots of buying going on which is good for a springtime.

There were some workshops also happening courtesy of the Royal School of Needlework, so that also gave textile enthusiasts an extra reason to come this year.
There is a nice gentle atmosphere to this fair and standalone textile fairs are rare in the art & craft world so this one is to be treasured!
